Schools in Ganjam district have remained closed since Oct 12 due to the damage caused by the cyclone Phailin, recent incessant heavy rains and floodsAlthough most schools in Phailin cyclone-hit Ganjam district are in a damaged condition, efforts are on to get classes started from Oct 31.

Schools in Ganjam district have remained closed since Oct 12 due to the damage caused by the cyclone, recent incessant heavy rains and floods. The administration does not want the education of young students to be hampered any further. However, the administration accepts that school buildings and campus have been very badly affected.

As per the direction of the district administration all schools in the district were opened on Monday with the orders that teachers will attend schools but no classes would be held till Oct 30. At a primary school at Kalajamuna village, assistant teacher Kuni Mohanty was seen to be cleaning up the school premises with the help of two class IV students. The headmaster was not around as she was busy in relief operation in the area. Roof of a large classroom of the school has got damaged during the cyclone. But the teacher was hopeful that classes could resume in other classrooms.

All unsafe rooms of schools would be locked up which would be later inspected by technical teams for a decision regarding demolition or repair. No unsafe room would be used for holding classes. In case a school building is found to be totally damaged, its classes may be held on the premises of nearby schools. It has also been decided to hold classes in two shifts where shortage of classrooms has occurred due to damage to the school building.

The main task before the school authorities, officials of education department and teachers is to clear the debris of damaged buildings of the school, fallen trees etc from the premises. As per District Collector Krishan Kumar, the school committees have been advised to take up minor repair works immediately with the funds available with them under various heads.

The local health workers, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) and Rural Water Supply and Sanitation (RWSS) departments have been ordered to help in disinfection of water sources on the campus of schools by using halogen tablets.

A team of education department officials including the headmasters would inspect all rooms of the school and furnish safety certificate by Oct 30.
