Forensics Analysis on the Cheap

GetData Forensic Explorer

Product of the week: Forensic Explorer.

Manufacturer: GetData Pty Ltd.

Description: Forensic Explorer analyzes electronic evidence from imaged media, logical partitions, and common forensic image formats. It supports Guidance Software's Ex01 and Lx01, AccessData's AD1 image files, as well more than 300 file types. The new software can also examine evidence in FAT, NTFS, HFS and EXT file systems. Forensic Explorer has modules to analyze file systems, email, registry files, and bookmarks. It integrates dtSearch keyword indexing technology, and Digital Metaphors' Report Builder for automated reporting. It also supports a script library with a simple scripting language. Many aspects of the program — such as menus, columns, and filters — can be customized.

Already known in the forensic community for Mount Image Pro and Recover My Files software, GetData's new offering supports data recovery and file carving, which is a process to extract data out of undifferentiated blocks or raw data. It also can categorize and filter files, provide hash and signature analysis, open and analyze Outlook .pst files, and interrogate slack space and unallocated file clusters.
